Victory
VE Day (Victory in Europe) 8 May 1945
Union Jack flags were flown all over town and women wore red white and blue clothes and flowers. The day was celebrated with street parties and fun and games for children. In the evening bonfires all over town provided warmth and light for dancing and singing. Many bonfires included effigies of Hitler and the ‘nasty spirit of Nazism'.
VJ Day (Victory in Japan) 14 August 1945
The Japanese surrender was announced on the radio at midnight on Tuesday the 14th August. This was followed by the wailing of the siren and soon the streets were filled with jubilant people dancing around bonfires and letting off fireworks. A fire engine drove around town with a crowd of happy people clanging the bell to alert the sleeping residents of the town of the good news.
